Buffy Vs. Rest: All Cooling Comforters Are *NOT* Created Equally

We decided to find the best iteration of the cooling comforter for our readers, once and for all.

We took it upon ourselves to determine which of these top-selling comforters is coolest on the block bed.

It’s no surprise in this modern day and age that bedding of every form and function has been invented. Recently, our team has been fixated on cooling comforters: the Rest Evercool and the Buffy Breeze comforters in particular. And before you raise an eyebrow, we give you our word—this kind of technology is objectively game-changing and not to be slept on. Well… you know what we mean.

The ideal cooling comforter doesn’t actually make you colder—its temperature self-regulates according to your body heat. Naturally, this is a pretty intricate process. Not all cooling bedding is as good at its job as the next. That’s why we decided to find the best iteration of the cooling comforter for our readers, once and for all.

Meet the Contestants: Buffy & Rest

We took the first step by paring down a number of brands to two key players, top-sellers in the world of (cooling) sleep: the Buffy Breeze Comforter (below, right) and the Rest Evercool Comforter (below, left).

Founded in 2017, Buffy makes bedding designed for (a) maximal comfort and (b) minimal environmental harm. Essentially, they have proven that working with the Earth (rather than against it) is the ticket to sheets, comforters, and pillows that remain unrivaled in comfort, durability, and style. Their model has been revolutionary to say the least, as they have accumulated oodles of awards and praise from Architectural Digest, Today, and BuzzFeed (to name just a few) over the last 7 years.

On the other hand we have Rest, founded in 2022 by a self-proclaimed hot sleeper looking to “save his marriage” with bedding to support both his and his wife’s temp preferences in bed. While Buffy makes bedding of all forms and functions, cooling is Rest’s MO. They only offer one comforter: the Evercool, which was a 2024 Good Housekeeping Best Bedding Award Winner. We compared it to Buffy’s Breeze Comforter, and we learned a LOT

The Elephant in the Room ($$)

At top of mind for us is always price. Both Buffy and Rest range in size options from Twin/Twin XL to King/California King, and Buffy ranges in price from $175-289 while Rest starts at $199 and goes up to $279. The nearly equal price range from each brand was a nice way to initially level the playing field. We considered this category a tie… and then we took a closer look at the other features.

TLDR: For the Skimmers Out There…

If you’re interested in only the need-to-knows, we laid them out here for you:

We break things down even further below…

Breaking Down the Breeze: Materials, Efficacy, Customer Experience

Admittedly, at The Obsession we’re long-time fans of Buffy’s eucalyptus-based TENCEL™ lyocell fabric (the comforter fill and shell are comprised of it). This material is genuinely unlike any other we’ve felt before—it looks and feels like silk, but it’s highly absorbent, cool-to-the-touch, and moisture-wicking. Made of 100% TENCEL lyocell, not only is the Breeze Comforter sustainably made (with 76% less water than cotton), but it’s also biodegradable and compostable. Have you ever heard of such a thing?

The main (only) qualm we had with the Breeze Comforter is that it’s dry clean only. That said, our team agreed that we wash our comforters so rarely that this feature, while inconveniencing, wasn’t enough to deter us.

That said, we also learned that Buffy’s Breeze Comforter is naturally weighted. This gives it a calming effect without the oppressive quality of a weighted blanket. Another neat detail is that this comforter is stitched with a subtle wave pattern which holds the fill in place so that you’re never fighting with your comforter to re-distribute its (therapeutic) weight across your bed

A Closer Look at the Rest Evercool: Materials, Efficacy, Customer Experience

Evercool® fabric is Rest’s creation, whereas TENCEL lyocell has been around since before Buffy. Consisting of 90% nylon and 10% spandex, Evercool® is used for the shell of the Evercool® Comforter. According to Rest’s website, this proprietary material (nylon + spandex) distributes heat faster than cotton and imitates the weave/texture of silk.

The Evercool® Comforter filling is a combination of TENCEL and Sorona® (although their FAQ section only lists the latter). While Sorona® is a fairly sustainable material (it’s “partially” plant-based) neither the nylon nor spandex of the comforter shell share that quality. Both are non-biodegradable, require extensive amounts of energy (read: global gas emissions) to produce, and they shed microplastics when washed. Remember, these two comprise the part of the comforter closest to your body

We appreciated the one-year limited warranty offered by Rest, but were frustrated to see that returns cost a $10 processing fee, and must be made within 30 days. Who charges for returns anymore? There was much to consider…

Our Hearts Led Us to the Buffy Breeze Comforter

Both Buffy and Rest knew as much as to avoid plain ol’ cotton when developing their respective cooling comforters, and it’s paid off. Each has a loyal entourage of fans, and with so many features running neck and neck (price and ratings in particular) our evaluation came down to the tiny-yet-noteworthy details.

In the end, Buffy’s 7 years of expertise gave them the edge. Buffy is so confident in TENCEL lyocell as their choice of material that every single component of the Breeze Comforter fully comprised of it. It felt like the Evercool Comforter cut corners by incorporating a blend of materials that likely cost less $$ to process, but charged the Earth more. For us, it came down to this question: if we’re spending ~$200 on a comforter either way, why not opt for the most innovative and sustainable model

As Buffy customers, we felt genuinely cared for. They offer a 7 night free trial, so you can sleep with your new Buffy comforter for a week (!) before deciding whether it’s right for you. Shipping and returns are free, and you have 50 days post-purchase to send any product back… but we really doubt that’ll happen.

Now go forth and sleep cool with Buffy’s Breeze Comforter! (With 20% off at that.)

Sweet, Cool-to-the-Touch, Dreams

You'll never wake up sweaty (or cold) again.
