No one knows a brand the way their customers do… so we analyzed *everything* past Ollie buyers had to say about their experiences.
Maybe you’ve seen them in Petco, or Van Leeuwen, or on billboards… but the fresh dog food brand Ollie is everywhere these days. We took this as a sign to zoom in on the brand and determine (a) why it’s so popular and (b) whether they are deserving of said popularity.
In other words… does Ollie have really good dog food or really good marketing? The only way to find out is to go straight to the source: the customers. We evaluated reviews from a range of outlets, including the Ollie website (which partners with Trustpilot), Petco, and Amazon, in an effort to gather an authentic picture of the consumer experience. Here’s what we found…
Patterns Across the Board (TL;DR)
In an effort to streamline our findings, we want to first present a summary of the results. Three recurring trends we noticed are as follows:
- Ease and convenience of delivery
- Taste that lives up to the recipe names… pups lick the bowl clean!
- An overwhelming consensus that Ollie is beyond worth it for their dogs
Back to the Roots (The Ollie Website)
Ollie partners with TrustPilot to provide candid and authentic reviews from real customers. If they wanted to make themselves look as good as possible, there would be no negativity whatsoever, but Ollie opts instead for honesty so their product can speak for itself. And boy, does it speak.
Out of 4,500 reviews in total, the average rating is a whopping 4.7 stars. In fact, 84% of reviews are 5 stars. And it’s refreshing (and reassuring) to know that these ratings aren’t from bots, but real humans (alongside their pups) who unpacked, served, and are now celebrating Ollie.
Pros: Accommodating customer service, visual evidence of improved pup health (shinier coats, higher energy), dogs are enthusiastic about flavor.
Cons: Occasional extra or missing products in orders (the Ollie Canine Support Center always reaches out to these people).
Petco
Surveying the Petco reviews felt a little bit like reading a restaurant’s page on Yelp—it was easy to see which meal had the most fans, and photos from enthusiastic customers were a helpful touch.
That said, the Fresh Beef with Sweet Potato Recipe was most popular at Petco, with 197 reviews averaging 5 stars. Next up was the Fresh Pork with Apple Recipe, with 149 reviews (averaging 4.9 stars), 85% of which were 5-star rankings. Following that recipe was Chicken, with 98 reviews averaging (you guessed it!) 5 stars as well. And last but certainly not least, Turkey with Blueberries, which has 78 reviews total and an overall ranking of 5 stars. So basically, the average consumer loves Ollie. Noted.
Pros: It looks and feels healthy to serve… the colors are bright and you can see the ingredients.
Cons: Wishes they came in smaller portions for smaller pups, and that they kept for longer after defrosting.
Amazon (Treats and Supplements Only)
It’s worth mentioning that Amazon offers only Ollie Jerky Strips (treats) and Chews (supplements), so these reviews are about those products specifically. That said, this platform provided a deeper look at Ollie’s most niche product lines, and they had stellar things to say.
Out of 788 total reviews on the Jerky Treats Variety Pack, the average ranking was 4.6 stars, and 81% of reviews were 5 stars. As for Ollie’s Supplement Chews, 183 reviews averaged to 4.3 stars.
Pros: Dogs are obsessed with the flavors, owners appreciate the lack of filler ingredients, oils, etc, packaging keeps the treats fresh.
Cons: Expensive for the number of chews you receive.
The 411 on Buffy
It’s always helpful to have some insight as to the background of a brand, too… and Ollie has quite the origin tale (pun intended). Founded in 2016, Ollie is the passion project of a team of dog owners who believe that pets are family members above all else—and their food should be a reflection of this. Thus began Ollie’s revolutionary approach to dog food: human-grade ingredients processed in US-based facilities for canine dishes rather than the pellets and mash of other brands, relying too heavily on fillers like grains and animal by-products.
If you thought it couldn’t get any better, hold on—Ollie is a delivery dog food service, so after you complete a survey to determine the right amount and flavors for your pup, Ollie brings dog food to your doorstep on your very own schedule. Because they understand the importance of finding the right dog food for your pup, Ollie makes it easy-peasy to try their menu… customize your initial Ollie Starter Box to save 50% on your first order.
Unsurprisingly, Ollie quickly received a great deal of praise and recognition for the efforts, including press coverage from Pet Age, TODAY, and Bloomberg. In the 8 years that have elapsed, Ollie has expanded their inventory to include supplement chews for dogs, jerky treats, and both Baked and Fresh meals.
The People (And Their Pups) Have Spoken
We opened this investigation without any expectations, and the results almost felt too good to be true. Almost. In light of the stellar press and reception that Ollie has had since their very early beginnings, it makes sense that the vast majority of their customers have overwhelmingly positive things to say. Even those with complaints expressed gratitude for Ollie’s customer service and overall quality. There’s no arguing with that.
Don't Just Take Our Word For It...
This many winning reviews can only mean one thing: Ollie is changing the game when it comes to dog food.
