I Never Thought I’d Be the Type to Make My Own Almond Milk, But JOI Makes It Easy

Plant milk…concentrate? Yup, you read that right.

If You Told Me 6 Months Ago I’d Be Making My Own “Milk,” I Would Have Laughed In Your Face

That is, until I discovered that the milk alternatives we buy at the store are 98 percent water and full of gums and stabilizers that can wreak havoc on your digestive system. Yup, the more you know, the less you want to, right? As a result, I began searching for an alternative, and this search led me to JOI, a company that is slowly but surely upending the carton game with their one-ingredient plant-based milk concentrates.

I know what you’re thinking. “Milk concentrate? Are you f—-ing kidding me?” I thought the same initially, but I truly can’t be bothered to buy big bags of almonds to make my own almond milk every few days, so I thought I might as well give em a try.

Friends, I’m happy to report that it’s not only possible, but easy AF to make some of the best-tasting alt-milk at home with almond, cashew, or oat from JOI Plant Milk Concentrate. Plus, there’s less waste, more flavor, and a greater return on investment than buying a big bag of almonds. One could even say that JOI is a money maker.

My Honest Review

Something cool about JOI’s products is that they have naturally long shelf lives (up to 18 months) because of the absence of preservatives or refrigeration requirements in their manufacturing process. Since gums, fillers, or additives are not used to “bind” or “bulk” the milk, each sip is even more flavorful because of the higher quality, whole-food ingredients.

I think one of my favorite things about these concentrates is that I can customize my experience to make my milk more or less creamy, based on how much water I add in. Because I only need to blend up the amount I need at a given time, I’m not wasting anything (fresh-made milk only lasts for a few days). All you have to do is use 1 tablespoon of JOI for every 1 cup of water.

In addition to preventing waste, I love that each jar of JOI makes seven quarts of milk, cutting down on my single-use waste in the form of cartons. (The Oat Milk option comes in powdered form, and a bag makes eight quarts.) Plus, I can go beyond just making milk—a spoonful of JOI adds depth and dimension to soups, veggie mashes, or anything else that would benefit from a little bit of creaminess.

Flavors, Flavors Galore!

It would be wrong of me not to sample all of JOI’s flavors, so I decided to do just that. JOI offers three flavors: Almond, Oat, and Cashew. The Almond Milk Base is classic and smooth, made with California blanched almonds, which contain the highest natural protein, fat, and fiber content of any nut. The Cashew Milk Base is ultra-creamy and rich—my go-to for coffee or homemade ice cream. Finally, the Oat Milk Powder is made from gluten-free and sustainably-sourced oats, with no thickeners. Oatly, watch your back!
